Abstract

About 10 % of the hypertensive patients cannot control elevated blood pressure despite usage of three or more antihypertensive drugs, so called resistant hypertension. Catheter-based renal denervation has been introduced as a surgical treatment for the resistant hypertension. However, the catheter-based procedure failed to show decrease in blood pressure in a recent randomized clinical trial. Here, we introduce a novel laparoscopy-based renal denervation to overcome the limitation of the existing procedure. We demonstrated the feasibility of the laparoscopy-based renal denervation via thermal-electrical based computational simulation, preclinical swine study, and histological analysis.
