- Abstract
- The improvement of drug delivery system to suppress neovascularization in the retina such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) requires prolonged release of a drug to inhibit angiogenesis effectively in order to provide better prognosis to patients. Here, we used co-axial printing technique to develop time-controlled core/shell drug carrier which could be injected and release two different drugs. The developed carrier has advantages of surgical free implantation and long-term and temporal release of bevacizumab and dexamethasone. The in vivo release kinetics were determined by rabbit model, and the carrier showed prolonged bevacizumab release kinetics compared to the intravitreal bevacizumab injection. Moreover, implementation of co-axial printing allowed for controllable size and dimensions of carriers which could make carriers to contain various doses of drugs. Therefore, the developed carrier can be applied not only for suppressing angiogenesis in the retina which has neovascularization, but also for angiogenesis related biomedical applications.
