Abstract
This paper presents a design methodology of feeding networks in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) phased arrays for mobile terminals by comprising grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW) with via fences based on a single-layer FR-4 PCB. The 8-elements phased arrays consist of compact one-dimensional electromagnetic bandgap (1-D EBG) antenna elements and 1×8 T-junction power divider including the predetermined phase delay lines. In order to minimize leakage power in feeding networks of phased array, island-shape GCPW transmission line (TL) with via fences featuring high-impedance surfaces (HIS) is presented. By investigating various types of feeding networks in mobile platforms, the proposed GCPW topology with via fences can improve the realized gain at coverage efficiency of 50% by more than 3 dB between 26 GHz and 36 GHz.
