Abstract
In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has made considerable advancements in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine and has emerged as a vital tool for creating functional living tissue/organ systems. Apart from technological advances, combining decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) methodologies with 3D bioprinting has resulted in significant progressions in developing highly biomimetic and reliable tissue/organ platforms for translational regenerative medicine. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the translation of 3D bioprinting techniques in various tissue engineering applications, while emphasizing the use of dECM-based bioinks. First, we introduce the 3D bioprinting technique and dECM methodologies to develop bioink and describe the key considerations when performing a 3D bioprinting process. Further, we discuss the recent progress of dECM bioinks combined with 3D bioprinting in the fabrication of different types of tissue constructs for in vivo tissue regeneration and in vitro modeling. Lastly, we describe the key challenges and future perspectives of dECM-based 3D bioprinting technology for clinical use.
