Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze Korea shipbuilding industry competitiveness and suggest competition strategy to maintain global competitiveness in shipbuilding industry. Shipbuilding industry is one of the key industries in Korea. Shipbuilding industry has special industrial characteristics. This thesis show the characteristics that ships can be ordered and produced with a contract between shipowner and shipyard. And then this study examines current merchant ship market condition and prospects future market conditions about bulk carrier, crude oil tanker and container ship. Korea shipbuilding industry could compete with other country because of having price competitiveness and a large and well equipped facilities to construct vessels. In this study, we can see the Korea shipbuilding industry competitiveness using some industry analysis model. And then we study new issues about current shipbuilding industry. Large container ship, offshore vessels and LNG carriers are new trends in shipbuilding industry. Korea shipbuilding industry has competitiveness in these areas. Korea shipbuilding industry leads world shipbuilding market. To maintain competitive advantage, we secure original technology for new vessels and we should diversify vessel line, and companies should cooperate with government.
