Abstract
The mechanical properties of the steel/polymer/steel layered material are determined by taking the sum or average of the properties of the constituent components. To understand the reasons behind non-hetero-deformation-induced hardening at the deformed polymer/steel interface, a combined approach of experimental methods and modeling techniques is employed. The metal-bonded interface can endure strain incompatibility, by generating additional geometrically necessary dislocations at the interface. In contrast, the polymer/steel interface has a low bond strength, which cannot withstand the strain incompatibility that develops during deformation. Therefore, the mechanical behavior of steel/polymer/steel clad materials follows the rule of mixtures determined by the volume fractions and properties of the individual components.image (c) 2024 WILEY-VCH GmbH
