Is Saemaul Undong still a Means for Politics?: Using Topic Modeling Based on LDA

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to objectively observe the Saemaul Undong since the 1990s with news big data, and to examine the aspects of today's Saemaul Undong, not the Saemaul Undong in history. First, a literature review focused on the meaning of Saemaul Undong and Saemaul Undong from the political perspective. In addition, through empirical research, the issues related to Saemaul Undong in Korean society were examined and then interpreted. For this, 38.305 news articles and 391 newspaper editorial data on Saemaul Undongwere collected from 1990 to 2021 from BigKinds and analyzed. In this process, LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation), one of the topic modeling analysis methods, was applied. As the result, this study implies it is necessary to improve the original meaning of Saemaul Undong and develop it into Korea's unique future-oriented local community development model rather than distorting the true meaning of Saemaul Undong under the old prejudice that it is a political movement.

본 연구는 뉴스 빅데이터로 1990년대 이후의 새마을운동을 객관적으로 관찰해 역사 속의 새마을운동이 아니라 오늘날의 새마을운동의 양상을 살펴보는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 새마을운동에 관한 개념과 새마을운동에 관한 정치성에 관한 선행연구를 수행하였다. 이와 더불어 경험연구를 통해 새마을운동에 대한 한국사회의 이슈를 살펴보고 해석하였다. 이를 위해 빅카인즈를 통해 1990년부터 2021년까지 38.305개의 뉴스를 수집하고, 이를 분석하였을 뿐만 아니라, 새마을운동에 관한 신문사설 391개 데이터를 분석하였다. 이 과정에서 토픽 모델링 분석 방법 중 하나인 LDA(Latent Dirichlet Allocation)을 적용하였다. 연구분석의 결과 1990년 이후 한국 사회에서 새마을운동과 관련된 이슈는 한국의 국제개발협력 모델로서의 새마을운동과 관련한 이슈, 지역공동체/지역활동과 관련한 이슈로서의 새마을운동, 마지막으로 새마을운동과 정권변화로 인한 새마을운동에 관한 논의로 구분되어 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 특히 새마을운동과 관련한 신문사설에 대한 분석을 통해 드러난 지금의 새마을운동에 관한 토픽은 글로벌 새마을운동으로 나타나고 있었다. 즉, 새마을운동의 정치성에 관한 비판적 논의에 현재의 새마을운동을 적용하는 것의 한계를 발견하였다. 이 연구는 뉴스 기사와 사설을 빅데이터 분석을 통해 새마을운동과 관련한 이슈를 객관화해 살펴보았다는 것에서 의미가 있다.
