- Abstract
- In rapidly evolving powder injection molding technology, the wideprevalenceof various microstructures demands the powders of smallerparticle sizes. The effects of particle sizes on the sintering behavior arecritical to not only shape retention of microstructures but also theirmechanical properties. This thesis investigates the effects of three differentparticle sizes on the sintering behavior of the 316L stainless steel (STS316L)and 17-4PH stainless steel (STS17-4PH) samples, prepared by powderinjection molding, using the theory of master sintering curve. For thispurpose, the STS316L and STS17-4PH powders of three different meanparticle sizes, i.e., 3, 4, and 8 μm, has been produced. The samples for thedilatometry experiment have been prepared through powder-binder mixing, injection molding, and solvent and thermal debinding. Dilatometryexperiments have been carried out on the samples in a H2 atmosphere at threedifferent heating rates of 3, 6, and 10 °C/min.The shrinkage data obtained by dilatometry experiments has been analyzed tounderstand the densification and the sintering behaviors in terms of particlessizes and heating rates. Master sintering curve (MSC) model has been used toquantify the effects of particles sizes.
