Abstract
Bismuth lead oxide, Bi8Pb5O17, consists of three polymorphs. The BCC beta-Bi8Pb5O17 is unstable below 590 degrees C and is transformed to tetragonal beta(2)-Bi8Pb5O17 on cooling. The tetragonal beta(2)-Bi8Pb5O17 reverts irreversibly to Phi-Bi8Pb5O17 phase at 470 degrees C. This paper focuses on the phases present in Phi-Bi8Pb5O17, using room-temperature X-ray powder diffraction in combination with a profile-fitting technique. The following phases were found in the Phi-Bi8Pb5O17: a triclinic compound, tetragonal Pb3O4, and monoclinic Pb12O19. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
