Abstract
Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is an important manufacturing technology for a net-shape production of ceramic and magnet components. In order to manufacture a high quality magnet using PIM, a comprehensive investigation on the magneto-rheological (MR) properties of PIM feedstock, magnetic powder-binder mixture, should be carried out experimentally and theoretically. The present research aims at developing a precision/micro magnetic PIM technology with a comprehensive understanding on the MR of magnetic powder-binder mixtures. A twin-screw type mixer is used to prepare the mixture of strontium ferrite (magnetic powder) and paraffin wax (binder), and the mixing characteristics are investigated in detail in order to achieve a homogeneous mixture. The rheological behavior of the mixture is then studied using a rotational rheometer of plate-plate type. In particular, the effects of magnetic flux density, powder volume fraction, temperature and shear rate on viscosity model of the magnet powder mixture are investigated in both linear and non-linear regions.
