Abstract
Magnetic filtering media used in chemical solutions are required to have excellent soft magnetic properties, large specific surface areas, and adequate corrosion resistance. As a filtering medium, the metallic glasses (commercial alloys 2605SC, 2826MB and 2605Co) in melt quenched state and in electro-less plated states have been investigated to determine the filtering performance for micron or sub-micron-sized ferromagnetic particles from alkaline solutions. Soft magnetic properties and corrosion resistance (in corrosion rate in alkaline solution) of the filters, made of laboratory-fabricated metallic glasses (FeNiCrPC alloys) and commercial alloys, were examined and compared in a filtering environment. The electro-less Ni-P plated 2605SC metallic glass was demonstrated optimum filtering medium properties that could be used in contaminated alkaline solutions with ferromagnetic particles or their compounds. The Ni-P plating was most effective in improving the corrosion resistance with the highest retention of soft magnetic properties among the metallic glass tested. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.
