Abstract
In wireless networks, Medium Access Control (MAC) is a core operation for efficient communication. Therefore, thousands of MAC protocols have been proposed for wireless communications. There are two major categories for wireless MAC protocols. One is a contention-based MAC protocol in which multiple nodes perform medium access contention and the winner takes a medium access opportunity. In general, the contention-based MAC protocols do not use information of other nodes. Therefore, they need little control overheads. On the other hand, they cannot control medium access delicately
they induce many collisions, spend much time to elect winner and hardly support fair medium access. The other one is contention free MAC protocol in which medium access is controlled by some dedicated nodes. Though they can control medium access delicately, they require much control overheads for information gathering and signaling. The drawbacks of conventional MAC protocols degrade network throughput and hinder QoS supporting. This thesis presents introduce another type of MAC, ID based MAC, and research results on that type of MAC. In ID based MAC, nodes use information of ID and networks which can be acquired without any control signal and share predefined access rule which can control medium access delicately with little effort. Therefore, ID based MAC requires light control overheads, spends short control time and supports QoS stably. However, ID should be managed carefully without destroying strong points of the ID based MAC protocol. This thesis presents an ID management scheme for the conventional ID based MAC protocol, a newly proposed ID based MAC protocol and its ID management scheme. An ID management scheme includes the unique ID acquisition, the fairness support, and the dynamic ID length control. The proposed unique ID acquisition scheme requires no message exchanges and takes very short time, a competing unit time. The proposed fairness supporting scheme can fairly distribute medium access opportunities even when network environment changes dynamically. The simulation and analysis results show that the proposed ID length control scheme prevents performance degradation of ID based MAC protocols when the network condition changes.
