The mechanism of defect formation upon thermal treatment of the fatty acid salt LB film was investigated by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy and X-ray reflectivity. It was observed from FTIR spectra of alternating LB film of normal and deuterated lead stearate that the major mechanism of deterioration of the film with thermal treatment was the ablation of the top layer.
