- Abstract
- This study investigated the interface microstructures and bonding properties of liquid phase bonded dissimilar metal joint of carbon steel/stainless steel plate using electro slag remelting (ESR). It was studied for compensating shortcomings of bonding properties of conventional dissimilar joint steel. Microstructure analysis and many sorts of tests for measuring mechanical properties were conducted for dissimilar joint steel manufactured by ESR process. It was exhibited that ESR bonded steel showed highly differentiated characteristics of interface in comparison with clad rolled steel and overlay welded steel. Furthermore, the ESR bonded steel exhibited outstanding bonding strength due to stable properties change on bonding region and complete bonding, which was interpreted as effects of diffusion mechanism. Simple shear test for investigating influence of microstructure on bonding properties on interface was conducted at room temperature using ESR bonded steels with different heat treatment. In image analysis of shear deformation behavior, abruptly changed mechanical properties were observed and bonding layer showed high strength in all heat treatment condition. The hardened bonding layer was unavoidable due to optimized chemical composition for martensite transformation. Consequently, reducing the strength difference through hardening base steel part exhibited the best bonding strength.
