영어 학습자를 위한 모음 약화 피드백 시스템

Abstract

일상적인 영어 회화에서 강세를 받지 않은 음절의 모음은 보통 짧고 약한 모음(ə 나 ɪ)으로 발음된다. 한국인이 영어로 발화할 시, 한국어의 특성상 이러한 ‘모음 약화’에 대한 이해가 부족하기 때문에 모음 약화를 구현하여 영어 특성의 억양을 구현하기가 어려운 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점에 대하여 충분히 인지하고 영어가 모국어가 아닌 영어 학습자들을 위한 영어 모음 약화의 구현을 위한 피드백 시스템을 소개한다. 본 피드백 시스템은 학습자의 매 문장 발화시 모음 약화에 대한 피드백을 제공함으로써 학습자 스스로 자신의 모음 발화를 개선할 수 있도록 하였다. 모음 약화 피드백 시스템은 세 가지 부분으로 나뉘어져 있다: (1) 모음 약화 현상을 예측하는 부분, (2) 사용자 발화에서 모음 약화 현상을 검출하는 부분, (3) 모음 약화 현상의 예측 결과와 검출 결과를 비교하여 시스템 사용자에게 올바른 피드백을 제공해주는 부분이다. 본 논문에서 소개한 시스템은 높은 정확도를 가지고 있으며, 시스템 사용자들에게 긍정적인 학습 결과를 가져다 주었다.

In spoken English, vowels in non-stressed syllables are often reduced to a brief neutral vowel (e.g., ə or ɪ). Non-native speakers of English may not use this ‘vowel reduction’ correctly, so their utterances may sound unnatural. I propose an automatic system to provide feedback about vowel-reduction to non-native speakers of English. The system has three parts: it (1) predicts vowel reduction, (2) detects vowel reduction in speech, compares the prediction to the detected sound to generate a score then (3) uses this score to provide corrective feedback to the speaker. The system had good accuracy and provided positive learning results for the user. The proposed system can be used as a part of a computer-assisted language learning system.
