Abstract
Exception handling is increasingly recognized as a critical capability of today's enterprises, especially manufacturers, since manufacturing systems have become complex to satisfy ever-changing customer requirements and support collaboration of various supply chain partners. This paper proposes a concept of proactive exception handling as an advanced approach for effective exception resolution as well as exception prevention. Especially, it proposes active data acquisition as a key element of proactive exception handling. The paper introduces a data acquisition language designed by analyzing the information requirements of active data acquisition. It presents the architecture of a system which enables active data acquisition for the language. Finally, the paper illustrates the language and system architecture using examples. The data acquisition language and system can support proactive exception handling by enabling active acquisition that provides the necessary data only when they are actually required without waiting for the data to be provided.
