Abstract
A finite element (FE) based approach is presented for caliber design in shape rolling. In this approach, the deformed shape of the workpiece, including the exit cross-sectional shape at each roll pass, is predicted by FE process simulation. Then, it is shown that a simple procedure may be taken to effectively refine the initial caliber design, on the basis of the predicted exit cross-sectional shapes. The validity of the proposed approach is demonstrated through application of the new caliber design thus obtained in actual production.
