The aging effect of gathering blood has been receiving considerable attention in various fields. Especially, the aging effect of stored RBCs is significantly important for clinical transfusion. To reduce the risk factors of transfusion with aged RBCs, it is necessary to understand the variation in hemorheological properties of aged RBCs. To investigate the aging effect on the variations in hemorheological characteristics of RBC suspension, the viscoelastic characteristics and mechanical properties were measured by using a microfluidic device. Viscosity was measured with varying storage time and shear rate. Elasticity of test blood samples was measured with respect to storage time. In addition, the distance from the inlet over which single RBCs can not pass the narrow part of the channel, the time elapsed for passing the narrow bridge part, and the thickness of cell-free layer were measured. As a result, hemorheological properties vary according to the period of blood storage. In addition, specific characteristics of RBCs are changed visibly at certain days and weeks of storage. The present experimental data are compared with previous results and the proper period of blood storage for transfusion is suggested.-
