- Abstract
- Female mosquitoes transmit various diseases as vectors during liquid-feeding. Figuring out the determinants of vector efficiency is an essential challenge in establishing strategies against these infectious diseases. The liquid-feeding flow is interconnected with main indexes of vector efficiency, that is, infection rate and transmission efficiency. However, the correlation between liquid-feeding flow characteristics and pathogen transmission remains poorly understood. The liquid-feeding flow characteristics of Aedes togoi and Anopheles sinensis were comparatively investigated in conjunction with vector efficiency via micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV). The ejection volume of Aedes togoi was higher than that of Anophels sinensis, though stroke volume was comparable. These difference would influence pathogen re-ingestion. Wall shear stresses in the proboscis of Aedes togoi and Anopheles sinensis were also clearly discriminatory, affecting the infective rate of B. malayi microfilariae. Net variations in volume of two pump chambers and diameter of the proboscis of the two mosquito species were compared to examine the differences in the liquid-feeding flow characteristics. Liquid-feeding flow characteristics have influence on vector efficiency; hence, this study can elucidate the vector efficiency of mosquitoes and the vector-pathogen interactions and eventually contribute to the development of strategies against vector-borne diseases.
