Abstract
This research investigates vapor phase heteroepitaxial growth of non-layered materials in two-dimensional (2D) nanostructure utilizing layer-structured substrate. We grew atomically thin trigonal selenium (t-Se) single crystals on interlayers of muscovite mica. Despite its preference of crystallization into one-dimensional (1D) structure, t-Se single crystals grew two-dimensionally in uniform orientations having (0001) plane parallel to the surface of substrate, with thicknesses < 10 nm and sizes ~ 100 µm. We suggest that 2D spatial confinement between mica layers and potassium ionic layers in muscovite induced this unique growth pattern. This growth method using layer-structured substrate can be adopted to 2D nanostructure growth of other non-layered materials. Furthermore, the 2D single crystal of t-Se can be a platform for quantitative study how light behaves in chiral matter which has atomic scale.
