- Abstract
- In this work, we propose a software-defined network (SDN)-assisted HTTP adaptive streaming system to improve the quality-of-experience of clients. The proposed system employs SDN technology to efficiently control network resources and video quality over the competing Wi-Fi network. In the proposed system, an SDN-enabled access point (AP) can monitor the streaming status of clients, such as buffered playback time and information of requested segments. An SDN controller collects not only the streaming status of clients but also Wi-Fi network conditions from the AP using OpenFlow. Additionally, it determines the segment bitrate of each client to provide a seamless and high-quality streaming service. The proposed system is fully implemented based on the open source program, such as ONOS and hostapd, and examined in a real Wi-Fi network. The experimental results show that the proposed system can provide seamless and high-quality HTTP adaptive streaming for the clients compared to existing algorithms.
